Teacher's Note: The Camera Trick

Welcome, scholars! Let me break this down for you. Think of a sentence like a movie scene. In Active Voice, the 'Subject' is the hero actively performing the action (e.g., 'Ram ate the apple'). But in Passive Voice, we flip the camera! The 'Object' becomes the star, and we focus on what happened to it (e.g., 'The apple was eaten by Ram'). The meaning is exactly the same, but the focus shifts. The ultimate trick? Always look for the Object, bring it to the front stage, and force your main verb into its V3 (Past Participle) uniform!

👨‍🏫

The Golden Swap (Subject & Object) गोल्डन स्वैप नियम (विषय और वस्तु)

1. Detailed Definition

Active Voice: In active voice, the subject of the sentence performs the action expressed by the verb. The structure is Subject + Verb + Object. It focuses on the "Doer".
Passive Voice: In passive voice, the subject receives the action expressed by the verb. The structure becomes Object + Helping Verb + V3 + by + Subject. It focuses on the "Receiver".

2. The 3-Step Swap Mechanics & Trick

Trick to Solve: To instantly find the Object in the active sentence, ask the question "What?" or "Whom?" to the main verb. The answer is your Object. Then, follow these 3 mechanical steps:

  • Step 1: Identify S-V-O. Find the Subject (Who is acting?), the Verb (What is the action?), and the Object (Who/what receives it?).
  • Step 2: The Cross-Over. Move the Object to the front (New Subject). Move the Subject to the back (Agent) and add the word "by".
  • Step 3: Verb to V3. The main verb ALWAYS transforms into its 3rd form (Past Participle).

3. 10 Foundation Examples

4. SSC Pro-Level Swaps (Advanced Edge Cases)

Trap 1: The "Double Object" Sentence

Some verbs (give, offer) take two objects.
Active: The teacher gave the student (Obj 1) a book (Obj 2).
Rule: You can make a passive sentence out of either object! Both are correct.
The student was given a book by the teacher.
A book was given to the student by the teacher.

Trap 2: Prepositional Verbs

If a verb relies on a preposition (e.g., laugh at), NEVER drop the preposition during the swap.
Active: The boys laughed at the beggar.
Passive: The beggar was laughed at by the boys.

3. 10 बुनियादी उदाहरण

Active: Ram writes a letter.
Passive: A letter is written by Ram.

4. SSC प्रो-लेवल स्वैप (उन्नत मामले)

ट्रैप 1: डबल ऑब्जेक्ट (Double Object)

कुछ क्रियाओं में दो वस्तुएँ होती हैं:
Active: The teacher gave the student (Obj 1) a book (Obj 2).
नियम: आप किसी भी वस्तु से पैसिव वाक्य बना सकते हैं!
The student was given a book by the teacher.
A book was given to the student by the teacher.

ट्रैप 2: प्रेपोजिशनल वर्ब्स (Prepositional Verbs)

यदि कोई क्रिया प्रेपोजिशन (जैसे, laugh at) पर निर्भर करती है, तो स्वैप के दौरान उसे कभी न छोड़ें।
Active: The boys laughed at the beggar.
Passive: The beggar was laughed at by the boys. ("at" को न हटाएं!)

Deep Dive: Tense Transformations डीप डाइव: काल परिवर्तन

The Golden Tense Rule: The time period (Past, Present, Future) of the sentence NEVER changes during conversion. Because the main verb is forced to become V3, we use the "B-family" helping verbs (is, am, are, was, were, be, being, been) to carry the tense!

स्वर्णिम काल नियम: रूपांतरण के दौरान वाक्य की समयावधि कभी नहीं बदलती है। चूंकि मुख्य क्रिया को V3 बनना पड़ता है, इसलिए हम काल को दर्शाने के लिए "B-family" सहायक क्रियाओं का उपयोग करते हैं!

⚡ Top 10 Speed Tricks

Master these rules to eliminate options in SSC exams instantly!

1. The V3 Elimination Method

Every single Passive Voice sentence MUST have a Verb in its 3rd form (Past Participle). If the main verb is not V3, eliminate that option immediately.

Writing / Wrote WRITTEN (V3)

2. The "Being" Rule for Continuous

If the Active sentence has an "-ing" word (e.g., is playing), the Passive MUST contain the word "BEING" before the V3 verb. No "being"? Wrong option.

3. The "Been" Rule for Perfect

If the Active sentence has "has", "have", or "had", the Passive MUST contain the word "BEEN" before the V3 verb.

4. Interrogative Structure (Questions)

A question in Active Voice remains a question in Passive Voice. The helping verb will still come BEFORE the new subject.
Example: "Did he go?" ➔ "Was he gone?"

5. The "Let" Command for Imperatives

For sentences giving an order, use the structure: Let + Object + be + V3.
Active: Open the door. ➔ Passive: Let the door be opened.

6. Modals + Be

If the sentence has a modal (can, should, may, must), just add "be" before the V3.
Active: You should do it. ➔ Passive: It should be done by you.

7. Infinitives (To + V1)

Whenever you see "To + V1" (I have *to do* it), it changes to "To + be + V3" in passive.
Active: I have to finish this. ➔ Passive: This has to be finished.

8. Fixed Prepositions (NO 'BY')

Huge SSC Trap! Some verbs take fixed prepositions instead of 'by'.
Know ➔ Known to
Surprise ➔ Surprised at
Fill ➔ Filled with
Example: I know him. ➔ He is known TO me. (Not 'by me'!)

9. The Vague Subject Drop

If the doer is obvious or unknown (Someone, People, Police), completely drop the "by agent" at the end.
Active: Police arrested the thief. ➔ Passive: The thief was arrested.

10. Prepositional Attachment

If a verb has a preposition attached in the active voice (laugh at, look after), it MUST stay attached to the V3 verb in the passive voice, right next to the 'by'.
Active: They laughed at him. ➔ Passive: He was laughed at by them.

4. प्रश्नवाचक वाक्य (Questions)

सक्रिय वाच्य में एक प्रश्न निष्क्रिय वाच्य में भी एक प्रश्न ही रहता है। सहायक क्रिया नए विषय से पहले ही रहेगी।

5. आदेश (Imperatives) के लिए "Let"

आदेश देने वाले वाक्यों के लिए, सूत्र का उपयोग करें: Let + Object + be + V3.
Active: Open the door. ➔ Passive: Let the door be opened.

6. Modals + Be

यदि वाक्य में कोई मॉडल (can, should, may) है, तो V3 से पहले केवल "be" जोड़ें।
Active: You should do it. ➔ Passive: It should be done.

7. Infinitives (To + V1)

जब भी आप "To + V1" देखते हैं, तो यह पैसिव में "To + be + V3" में बदल जाता है।
Active: I have to do it. ➔ Passive: It has to be done.

8. निश्चित प्रेपोजिशन (NO 'BY')

कुछ क्रियाएँ 'by' के बजाय निश्चित प्रेपोजिशन लेती हैं।
Know ➔ Known to
Surprise ➔ Surprised at
उदाहरण: I know him. ➔ He is known TO me. (by me नहीं!)

9. अस्पष्ट विषय को छोड़ें

यदि कर्ता अज्ञात या सामान्य है (Someone, Police), तो अंत में "by agent" को पूरी तरह से हटा दें।

10. प्रेपोजिशन अटैचमेंट

यदि सक्रिय क्रिया में कोई प्रेपोजिशन लगा है, तो उसे पैसिव में भी V3 के साथ जोड़े रखें।

In Active voice, verbs like 'make' take a bare infinitive (no 'to'). In Passive voice, they MUST take the full infinitive ('to' + V1).

Active: I made him wash the car.
Passive: He was made to wash the car by me.

Trap 3: The "It is time" Structure

When an active sentence starts with "It is time to + V1 + Object", the passive form is exactly: It is time for + Object + to be + V3.

Active: It is time to ring the bell.
Passive: It is time for the bell to be rung.

Trap 4: Negative Indefinite Pronouns

If the active sentence uses 'Nobody', 'None', or 'No one', the passive sentence MUST be negative (using 'not'), and the agent is dropped.

Active: Nobody can solve this.
Passive: This cannot be solved.

Trap 5: Gerunds (-ing forms as objects)

When a sentence has a verb followed by a gerund, the passive structure becomes: Verb + being + V3.

Active: I remember my father taking me to the zoo.
Passive: I remember being taken to the zoo by my father.

Trap 6: "That" Clauses (Impersonal Passives)

When the object is a full clause (e.g., They say *that he is a spy*), use "It is said that..." OR make the subject of the clause the new subject.

Active: People believe that he is honest.
Passive 1: It is believed that he is honest.
Passive 2: He is believed to be honest.

Trap 7: 'To Be' + Adjective + Infinitive

Structure: Subject + to be + Adjective + for + Object + to be + V3.

Active: It is necessary to write this.
Passive: It is necessary for this to be written.

Trap 8: Static Verbs & Possession (NO PASSIVE)

Verbs indicating possession (have, belong, own, possess) or state (lack, consist, resemble) CANNOT be changed to passive voice.

Active: I have a car.
Passive: No Passive Voice Possible. (Do NOT choose "A car is had by me").

Trap 9: Object Complements

In sentences with an object complement (a word renaming the object), the complement CANNOT become the subject. Only the direct object can.

Active: They elected him president.
Passive: He was elected president by them. (Not: President was elected...)

Trap 10: Phrasal Verbs with Double Prepositions

If an active verb has prepositions attached (e.g., "look down upon"), ALL prepositions must remain attached to the V3 verb right before 'by'.

Active: You must not look down upon the poor.
Passive: The poor must not be looked down upon by you.

Passive: He was made to wash the car by me.

Passive: He was elected president by them.

ट्रैप 10: दोहरे प्रेपोजिशन वाले वाक्यांश

यदि एक्टिव वर्ब के साथ प्रेपोजिशन हैं (जैसे "look down upon"), तो वे पैसिव में V3 के साथ 'by' से ठीक पहले जुड़े रहने चाहिए।

Active: You must not look down upon the poor.
Passive: The poor must not be looked down upon by you.
