If 'ਹ' comes in the middle or end, the preceding consonant often takes a 'Sihari' (ਿ) to produce the correct tone.
Wrong (ਅਸ਼ੁੱਧ): ਸ਼ਹਰ, ਕਹਰ, ਨਹਰ
Right (ਸ਼ੁੱਧ): ਸ਼ਹਿਰ, ਕਹਿਰ, ਨਹਿਰ

Words sounding like they have a 'Lavan' (ੇ) before 'ਹ' are actually spelled with a 'Sihari' (ਿ) on the preceding consonant.
Wrong (ਅਸ਼ੁੱਧ): ਜੇਹੜਾ, ਕੇਹੜਾ, ਮੇਹਨਤ
Right (ਸ਼ੁੱਧ): ਜਿਹੜਾ, ਕਿਹੜਾ, ਮਿਹਨਤ

Words sounding like they have a 'Hora' (ੋ) before 'ਹ' are spelled with an 'Aunkar' (ੁ) on the 'ਹ' itself.
Wrong (ਅਸ਼ੁੱਧ): ਬਹੋਤ, ਵੋਹਟੀ, ਸੋਹਰਾ
Right (ਸ਼ੁੱਧ): ਬਹੁਤ, ਵਹੁਟੀ, ਸਹੁਰਾ

Some words require a half 'ਹ' (੍ਹ) in the foot to indicate a rising tone. Omitting it is grammatically incorrect.
Wrong (ਅਸ਼ੁੱਧ): ਪੜਾਈ, ਚੜਾਈ, ਜੜਾਂ
Right (ਸ਼ੁੱਧ): ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ, ਚੜ੍ਹਾਈ, ਜੜ੍ਹਾਂ

Many Persian/Arabic/Sanskrit derived words require a long 'ਆ' sound, not a short 'ਅ'.
Wrong (ਅਸ਼ੁੱਧ): ਅਕਾਸ਼, ਅਵਾਜ਼, ਅਜ਼ਾਦ
Right (ਸ਼ੁੱਧ): ਆਕਾਸ਼, ਆਵਾਜ਼, ਆਜ਼ਾਦ

Standard Punjabi prefers starting these words with 'ਇ' (Eeri + Sihari).
Wrong (ਅਸ਼ੁੱਧ): ਏਤਿਹਾਸ, ਅਸ਼ਨਾਨ
Right (ਸ਼ੁੱਧ): ਇਤਿਹਾਸ, ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ

Words starting with the 'u' sound must use 'ਉ', not 'ਓ' or 'ਅ'.
Wrong (ਅਸ਼ੁੱਧ): ਓਦੇਸ਼, ਅਪਕਾਰ (when meaning favor)
Right (ਸ਼ੁੱਧ): ਉਦੇਸ਼, ਉਪਕਾਰ

Standard Punjabi uses 'ਔ' (Aira + Kanora) instead of breaking the sound into two vowels 'ਅਉ'.

In modern Punjabi, the 'y' sound in the middle of words is usually replaced by 'ਇਆ'.

Punjabi heavily uses 'ਣ' where Hindi might use 'ਨ'.

Many people incorrectly substitute 'ਵ' with 'ਬ' in writing.

Using 'ਸ' instead of 'ਸ਼' changes the meaning or makes it incorrect.

'ੜ' is a unique Punjabi sound (retroflex flap). Using 'ਰ' instead is incorrect.

Right (ਸ਼ੁੱਧ): ਕੁੜੀ, ਪੀੜ

In formal Punjabi grammar, words from Sanskrit roots retain 'ਯ', though pronounced as 'ਜ' in spoken dialects.
Wrong (ਅਸ਼ੁੱਧ): ਜਤਨ (in pure written form)
Right (ਸ਼ੁੱਧ): ਯਤਨ, ਯੋਗ

Often confused in spoken dialects but distinct in writing.

Tippi is used with Mukta, Sihari, Aunkar, Dulainkar. Bindi is used with Kanna, Bihari, Lavan, Dulavan, Hora, Kanora.

Adhak doubles the sound of the following consonant. Missing it changes the meaning.

Right (ਸ਼ੁੱਧ): ਬੱਚਾ (child), ਪੱਤਾ (leaf)

Certain words require 'Raara' in the foot to create blended sounds.
Wrong (ਅਸ਼ੁੱਧ): ਪਰਕਾਸ਼, ਪਰੇਮ
Right (ਸ਼ੁੱਧ): ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼, ਪ੍ਰੇਮ

Standard Punjabi often converts the Sanskrit 'Kri' into 'Kir', except in a few words like ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ.
