The Binary vs Specific Value Logic Gate बाइनरी (Yes/No) बनाम निश्चित मान नियम
In SSC exams, Data Sufficiency asks you one simple question: "Is the data provided enough to lock in an answer?" You must understand the two distinct question archetypes:
If Statement I gives Rohan's age as either 15 OR 18, it is INSUFFICIENT. It must lock into one exact number (e.g., exactly 18).
If Statement I proves mathematically that 'x' is definitely ODD, then Statement I is SUFFICIENT! Why? Because it successfully answered the question with a definitive "NO". (Students mistakenly think only a 'Yes' is sufficient).
The 1-2-Combine Strict Evaluation Flow 1-2-
The biggest trap set by TCS in SSC CGL Tier-2 is tempting you to combine Statement I and Statement II instantly. Adhere strictly to this order of execution:
- Cover Statement II with your hand: Evaluate Statement I completely on its own. If it answers the prompt, the answer is either Option (A) or Option (C) [Either].
- Cover Statement I with your hand: Evaluate Statement II completely in a vacuum. Forget everything you just read in Statement I!
- The Marriage (Combination): If and ONLY if Statement I fails alone AND Statement II fails alone, you merge their data pools together.
Stmt I: The sum of digits is 7.
Stmt II: The tens digit is 3 more than the units digit.
Execution: Stmt I alone gives (16, 25, 34, 43, 52, 61, 70) -> Fail. Stmt II alone gives (30, 41, 52, 63, 74, 85, 96) -> Fail. Combined: Only the number 52 satisfies both! Ans: Both required.
SSC CGL Tier-2
Standard Options & Multi-Value Traps
Memorize the standard 4 SSC option codes so you don't misclick during the pressure of the countdown timer:
| Option Code | Official Meaning | Logical Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Option (A) | Only Statement I is sufficient | Stmt I works | Stmt II fails |
| Option (B) | Only Statement II is sufficient | Stmt I fails | Stmt II works |
| Option (C) | Both I and II together are necessary | Stmt I fails | Stmt II fails | (I + II) works |
| Option (D) | Neither I nor II is sufficient | Stmt I fails | Stmt II fails | (I + II) fails |
Question: "What is the value of variable $x$?"
Statement I: $x^2 = 36$
Novice Mistake: Oh, $\sqrt{36}=6$, sufficient! Click!
Master Reality: In algebra, $x^2 = 36 \implies x = +6 \text{ OR } -6$. Because there are TWO valid mathematical answers, Statement I alone is strictly INSUFFICIENT. You would need a Stmt II saying "$x > 0$" to lock it to +6!
|---|---|---|
| विकल्प (A) | केवल कथन I पर्याप्त है | कथन I सफल | कथन II असफल |
| विकल्प (C) | I और II दोनों मिलकर आवश्यक हैं | कथन I असफल | II असफल | (I + II) सफल |
| विकल्प (D) | न तो I और न ही II पर्याप्त है | कथन I असफल | II असफल | (I + II) भी असफल |
कथन I: $x^2 = 36$
⚡ Pro Tips & Speed Tricks (Top 9)
Data Sufficiency is a game of mental shortcuts. Click the listen buttons to hear your instructor explain these professional exam hacks.
1. The "Count the Variables" Rule for Equations
If a math question asks for the value of $x$, and Statement I gives a linear equation with TWO variables ($3x + 2y = 18$), immediately mark it insufficient. You mathematically require as many unique linear equations as there are unknown variables to nail down a static number.
2. The Geometry Dimension Check
If asked "What is the volume of the cylinder?", look at the required formula: $V = \pi r^2 h$. You need TWO distinct dimensions ($r$ and $h$). If Stmt I only gives the base radius, and Stmt II only gives the total height, you instantly know the answer is "Both Required" without doing a single multiplication!
3. The Relative vs Absolute Trap (Percentages & Ratios)
If a question asks "What is the exact monthly income of Amit?", and Statement I says "Amit spends 70% of his income", and Statement II says "Amit saves 30% of his income" — mark Neither Sufficient! Ratios and percentages are *relative*. They can never generate an *absolute* real-world currency value without a hard anchor digit.
4. The Blood Relation "Genderless Anchor"
In reasoning DS ("How is P related to M?"), if Statement I says "P is the sibling of K's mother", remember that 'sibling' could mean brother OR sister! Because P's gender is left completely ambiguous, P could be a Maternal Uncle or a Maternal Aunt. Mark insufficient instantly!
5. The Circular Seating Direction Check
When asked "Who sits immediately to the right of A in a circle of 5 people?", look for the anchor statement. If Stmt I doesn't state whether they are facing the *Center* or facing *Outward*, it is automatically disqualified.
6. The "Either / Or" Check
If Statement I alone gives the unique answer $x=5$, AND Statement II alone (using a completely different geometric angle) also independently arrives at $x=5$, the correct answer is NOT "Both required". It is the rare Option: Either I or II alone is sufficient.
7. Look for the "Hidden Integer" Constraint
Sometimes $x^2 = 25$ IS sufficient! How? If the prompt text in the very top line states: "If $x$ is a positive integer, what is $x$?". The prompt's global constraint kills the $-5$ option for you. Always scan the master question stem for italicized constraints!
8. Ranking Overlap Rule
In ranking DS ("How many students are in the class?"), if Stmt I gives A's rank from the top (10th) and Stmt II gives B's rank from the bottom (15th), combining them is STILL insufficient unless a third clue tells you exactly how many people sit *between* A and B!
9. The "Obvious Restatement" Trap
If Stmt I says "A is older than B", and Stmt II says "B is younger than A" — notice that Stmt II is just a passive restatement of Stmt I! Combining them adds zero new data to your universe. If Stmt I failed alone, combining it with its clone will also fail.

I. The sum of the digits is 8.
II. The difference between the digits is 2.
View Answer & Logic
Logic: From Stmt I: possible numbers are (17, 26, 35, 44, 53, 62, 71). From Stmt II: difference is 2. Combining them leaves us with TWO valid numbers: 35 (5+3=8, 5-3=2) and 53 (5+3=8, 5-3=2). Because we cannot lock down one unique number, even both statements combined fail!
I. Village P is to the North of Village R.
II. Village Q is to the West of Village R.
View Answer & Logic
Logic: Set R as the origin (0,0). Stmt I places P at (0, +y) [North]. Stmt II places Q at (-x, 0) [West]. Looking from Q (-x,0) to P (0,+y), the vector points strictly North-East. Both statements were necessary to build the map.
I. A is taller than C and D.
II. B is shorter than only one person.
View Answer & Logic
Logic: Stmt I says A > (C,D), leaving A or B as potential tallest. Stmt II says B is 2nd tallest from the top (_ > B > _ > _). Therefore, the only slot left for the #1 tallest person is A! Both needed.
I. A, C और D से लंबा है。
II.
कथन I से A, C और D से लंबा है।
I. $x^2 - 7x + 12 = 0$
II. $x$ is an even number.
View Answer & Logic
Logic: Solving quadratic Stmt I yields roots $(x-3)(x-4)=0 \implies x = 3 \text{ OR } 4$. Insufficient alone. Adding Stmt II's "even number constraint" eliminates 3, locking the unique value to $x=4$. Both required.
I. $x^2 - 7x + 12 = 0$
II.
I. The ratio of mother's age to son's age is 5 : 2.
II. 4 years hence, the ratio of their ages will be 11 : 5.
View Answer & Logic
Logic: Standard cross-multiplication setup for age puzzles. Two unique time-anchor ratio equations allow finding the static multiplier 'x'. (Do not solve $x=4$, tick Both and move on!).
I. His sister remembers he arrived after Tuesday but before Friday.
II. His friend remembers he arrived after Wednesday but before Saturday.
View Answer & Logic
Logic: Stmt I gives (Wednesday, Thursday). Stmt II gives (Thursday, Friday). The strict intersection of both memory sets is exactly one day: Thursday. Both required.
I. All four sides are equal in length.
II. Both diagonals are equal in length and bisect at 90 degrees.
View Answer & Logic
Logic: Stmt I alone describes a Rhombus (could be tilted). Stmt II alone describes a Rectangle or Square. Combined together, equal sides + equal diagonals locking at 90° guarantees a static Square.
I. M is the brother of K, who is the daughter of N.
II. N is the husband of P, who is the mother of M.
View Answer & Logic
Logic: Stmt I: K is daughter of N, M is brother of K $\implies$ M is the Son of N. (Sufficient alone). Stmt II: P is mother of M, N is husband of P $\implies$ M is the Son of N. (Sufficient alone). Therefore, Either statement works independently!
I. Selling it at a 20% profit yields Rs. 60 more than selling it at a 10% loss.
II. The marked price is 25% above the cost price.
View Answer & Logic
Logic: From Stmt I: The gap between +20% (profit) and -10% (loss) on the scale is 30%. $30\% \text{ of CP} = 60 \implies 100\% \text{ CP} = 200$. Stmt I alone solves it instantly. Stmt II gives no currency value.
$30\% = 60 \implies 100\% = 200$.
I. It travels 40 km downstream in 2 hours.
II. The speed of the stream is 4 km/hr.
View Answer & Logic
Logic: Stmt I gives Downstream Speed $(B + S) = 40/2 = 20\text{ km/hr}$. Stmt II gives Stream Speed $S = 4$. Combining them: $B + 4 = 20 \implies B = 16\text{ km/hr}$. Both statements required.
