Teacher's Note: The "Telephone Game"

Welcome, scholars! Narration is like playing the telephone game. In Direct Speech, you repeat the exact words someone said (inside quotation marks). In Indirect Speech, you report what they said in your own words, adjusting the tense and pronouns because time has passed.

The golden formula to solve SSC questions in 5 seconds is the SON Rule. It controls how pronouns change from direct to indirect speech.
S (Subject) -> 1st Person (I, We)
O (Object) -> 2nd Person (You)
N (No Change) -> 3rd Person (He, She, It, They)

👨‍🏫

S (Subject) -> 1st Person (I, We)
O (Object) -> 2nd Person (You)
N (No Change) -> 3rd Person (He, She, It, They)

The SON Rule & Core Components SON नियम और मुख्य घटक

A Direct Speech sentence has two parts:
1. Reporting Verb: The part outside the quotes (e.g., He said to me).
2. Reported Speech: The exact words inside the quotes (e.g., "I am going.").

How the SON Rule Works

  • 1st Person (I, My, Me, We, Us) changes according to the Subject of the reporting verb.
  • 2nd Person (You, Your) changes according to the Object of the reporting verb.
  • 3rd Person (He, She, It, They, Name) undergoes No Change.

प्रत्यक्ष कथन (Direct Speech) वाक्य के दो भाग होते हैं:
1. रिपोर्टिंग वर्ब (Reporting Verb): उद्धरण (quotes) के बाहर का भाग (जैसे, He said to me)।
2. रिपोर्टेड स्पीच (Reported Speech): उद्धरण के अंदर के सटीक शब्द (जैसे, "I am going.")।

SON नियम कैसे काम करता है

  • 1st Person (I, My, Me, We, Us) रिपोर्टिंग वर्ब के Subject (विषय) के अनुसार बदलता है।
  • 2nd Person (You, Your) रिपोर्टिंग वर्ब के Object (वस्तु) के अनुसार बदलता है।
  • 3rd Person (He, She, It, They, Name) में कोई बदलाव नहीं (No Change) होता है।

10 Foundation Examples (SON Rule in Action)

S (Subject) -> 1st Person (I/We)

Indirect: He said that he played.
Direct: She said, "I like coffee."
Indirect: She said that she liked coffee.

Indirect: They said that they were ready.

O (Object) -> 2nd Person (You)

Indirect: He told me that I was late.
Direct: I said to him, "You can go."
Indirect: I told him that he could go.
Direct: She said to them, "You won."

Deep Dive: Tense Backshifting डीप डाइव: काल परिवर्तन (Backshifting)

The Time Travel Rule: When the reporting verb (said, told) is in the past tense, the tense inside the quotes travels one step backward into the past. Present becomes Past. Past becomes Past Perfect.

⚠️ The Exceptions (No Tense Change)

1. If the Reporting Verb is in Present or Future (says, will say).
2. If the Reported Speech is a Universal Truth, Habitual Action, Historical Fact, or Proverb.

⚡ Top 10 Speed Tricks

Master these rules to eliminate options in SSC exams instantly!

1. The "Said to" vs "Said" Rule

If the direct sentence has "said to + object", it MUST change to "told" (or asked/ordered). If it only has "said" (no object), it remains "said". Eliminate options that use "told" without an object.

He said to me ➔ He said me (WRONG)
He said to me ➔ He told me (RIGHT)

2. The Present Tense Anchor

If the reporting verb is "says" or "will say", the tense inside the quotes DOES NOT CHANGE. Eliminate any option where the tense was backshifted.

3. Universal Truths Anchor

If the quote is a scientific fact, proverb, or universal truth, the tense NEVER changes, even if the reporting verb is "said".

4. The 'That' Conjunction

For assertive (normal) sentences, the comma and quotes are replaced by the conjunction "that". For questions, "that" is NEVER used.

5. Yes/No Question Trigger

If a question starts with a helping verb (Is, Are, Do, Does, Will, Can), use "if" or "whether" as the conjunction. Eliminate options with "that".

6. WH- Question Anchor

If a question starts with a WH- word (Who, What, Where, Why, How), the WH- word ITSELF becomes the conjunction. Do NOT use "if" or "that".

7. Question to Statement Shift

In indirect speech, a question ALWAYS becomes a normal statement. The subject must come BEFORE the helping verb. Eliminate options ending in a question mark (?).

8. The 'To' + V1 Imperative Rule

For orders and requests (Imperative), the conjunction is "to" followed by the base verb (V1). For negative orders ("Don't do it"), use "not to".

9. The "Let's" Proposal Trick

If the quote starts with "Let us" or "Let's", change the reporting verb to "proposed to" or "suggested to", and use "that they should" or "that we should".

10. Immediate Time/Place Elimination

Always scan the end of the sentence first. If you see "today", it MUST become "that day". If you see "tomorrow", it MUST become "the next day". Eliminate unchanged time words immediately.

⚡ टॉप 10 स्पीड ट्रिक्स

SSC परीक्षा में विकल्पों को तुरंत समाप्त करने के लिए इन नियमों में महारत हासिल करें!

1. "Said to" बनाम "Said" नियम

यदि डायरेक्ट वाक्य में "said to + object" है, तो यह "told" में बदल जाना चाहिए। यदि इसमें केवल "said" है (कोई वस्तु नहीं), तो यह "said" ही रहता है।

2. Present Tense एंकर

यदि रिपोर्टिंग वर्ब "says" या "will say" है, तो उद्धरण के अंदर का काल नहीं बदलता है।

3. सार्वभौमिक सत्य (Universal Truths)

यदि उद्धरण एक वैज्ञानिक तथ्य या कहावत है, तो काल कभी नहीं बदलता है।

4. 'That' कंजंक्शन

साधारण वाक्यों के लिए, अल्पविराम और उद्धरणों को "that" से बदल दिया जाता है। प्रश्नों के लिए "that" का उपयोग कभी नहीं किया जाता है।

5. Yes/No प्रश्न

यदि प्रश्न सहायक क्रिया (Is, Do, Will) से शुरू होता है, तो "if" या "whether" का उपयोग करें।

6. WH- प्रश्न एंकर

यदि प्रश्न WH- शब्द (Who, What) से शुरू होता है, तो वही शब्द कंजंक्शन बन जाता है। "if" का प्रयोग न करें।

7. प्रश्न से कथन में बदलाव

अप्रत्यक्ष कथन में, एक प्रश्न हमेशा एक सामान्य कथन बन जाता है (विषय सहायक क्रिया से पहले आता है)। प्रश्न चिह्न (?) हटा दें।

8. 'To' + V1 आदेश नियम

आदेशों और अनुरोधों के लिए, कंजंक्शन "to" होता है। नकारात्मक आदेशों ("Don't") के लिए "not to" का उपयोग करें।

9. "Let's" प्रस्ताव ट्रिक

यदि उद्धरण "Let us" से शुरू होता है, तो रिपोर्टिंग वर्ब को "proposed" में बदलें और "that they should" का उपयोग करें।

10. समय/स्थान एलिमिनेशन

हमेशा पहले वाक्य के अंत को स्कैन करें। "today" को "that day" बनना चाहिए। न बदले गए शब्दों वाले विकल्पों को हटा दें।

Deep Dive: Questions & Imperatives डीप डाइव: प्रश्न और आज्ञासूचक वाक्य

Interrogative sentences (Questions) and Imperative sentences (Orders/Requests) have completely different rules for conjunctions and structure.

नियम 1: प्रश्नवाचक (Yes/No Questions)

रिपोर्टिंग वर्ब asked हो जाता है। कंजंक्शन if या whether हो जाता है। वाक्य साधारण (Subject + Verb) बन जाता है।

Direct: He said to me, "Are you reading?"
Indirect: He asked me if I was reading.

नियम 2: प्रश्नवाचक (WH- Questions)

रिपोर्टिंग वर्ब asked हो जाता है। WH- शब्द (Who, What) स्वयं कंजंक्शन का कार्य करता है। वाक्य साधारण बन जाता है।

Direct: He said to her, "Where do you live?"
Indirect: He asked her where she lived.

नियम 3: आज्ञासूचक (आदेश/अनुरोध)

🚨 Advanced Traps & Exclamatory Sentences 🚨 उन्नत ट्रैप और विस्मयादिबोधक वाक्य

These are the examiner's favorite tricks for Tier-II / Mains exams. Master these 10 structures to secure top marks.

Trap 1: Exclamatory Sentences (Joy/Sorrow)

Change reporting verb to exclaimed with joy/sorrow/surprise. Use 'that'. Drop exclamation words (Alas, Hurrah).

Direct: He said, "Alas! I am ruined."
Indirect: He exclaimed with sorrow that he was ruined.

Trap 2: Optative Sentences (Wishes/Prayers)

Change reporting verb to wished or prayed. Use 'that'. Change 'May' to 'might'.

Direct: He said to me, "May God bless you."
Indirect: He prayed that God might bless me.

Trap 3: Vocative Case (Addressing someone)

If someone is addressed by name inside the quotes, bring the name OUTSIDE to become the object of the reporting verb.

Direct: He said, "Ram, I am coming."
Indirect: He told Ram that he was coming.

Trap 4: Question Tags

A question tag inside direct speech means the speaker is asking for confirmation. Treat it as a normal Yes/No question using "if".

Direct: He said, "You are going, aren't you?"
Indirect: He asked me if I was going.

Trap 5: 'Need not' and 'Must'

'Need not' usually remains 'need not'. 'Must' showing obligation changes to 'had to', but 'must' showing a universal rule remains 'must'.

Direct: He said, "You must leave."
Indirect: He said that I had to leave.

Trap 6: "Let us" (Proposal) vs "Let me" (Request)

'Let us' changes to 'proposed/suggested that they should'. 'Let me' changes to 'requested to let him' or 'wished that he might be allowed'.

Direct: He said, "Let me go."
Indirect: He requested them to let him go.
Direct: He said, "Let us play."
Indirect: He proposed that they should play.

Trap 7: Addressing as Sir/Madam

Remove the word Sir/Madam and add the word "respectfully" to the reporting verb.

Direct: The boy said, "Sir, may I come in?"
Indirect: The boy respectfully asked if he might come in.

Trap 8: Yes or No Replies

Change 'Yes' to "replied in the affirmative". Change 'No' to "replied in the negative".

Direct: He said, "Yes, I will go."
Indirect: He replied in the affirmative and said that he would go.

Trap 9: Exclamatory with 'What' or 'How'

These express surprise. Convert them to assertive sentences using 'very' or 'great'.

Direct: He said, "What a beautiful girl!"
Indirect: He exclaimed with surprise that she was a very beautiful girl.

Trap 10: Sentences with 'Good Morning' / 'Farewell'

For greetings, use wished. For goodbyes (Good night, Farewell), use bade.

Indirect: He wished his friend good morning.
Direct: He said, "Goodbye, my friends."
Indirect: He bade his friends goodbye.
