тЬи A Message from The Scholars aKademy: Every turn has a purpose, and every path leads to an answer. We are here to help you find the shortest route to success.
Always map movements relative to the standard compass: North is Up, South is Down, East is Right, West is Left. A Right turn is always 90┬░ Clockwise. A Left turn is 90┬░ Anti-Clockwise.
Ex 1: Walk North, turn Right, walk, turn Right. Which direction are you facing? -> South. (N -> E -> S).
Ex 2: Facing East. Turn 90┬░ CW, then 135┬░ CCW. -> 135(CCW) - 90(CW) = 45┬░ CCW. East - 45┬░ = North-East.
Ex 3: Walk West, turn Left, turn Left, turn Right. -> Left + Left = Opposite (East). Right from East = South.
Ex 4: Facing North. Turn 180┬░, then 90┬░ CW. -> 180┬░ = South. 90┬░ CW from South = West.
Ex 5: Go East 10m, turn Left 5m, turn Right 10m. Facing? -> East.
Ex 6: A person is facing North-West. He turns 90┬░ clockwise, then 180┬░ anticlockwise. Facing? -> 180 - 90 = 90┬░ CCW. NW - 90┬░ = South-West.
Ex 7: If South-East becomes North, North-East becomes West. What will West become? -> SE to N is 135┬░ CCW. Apply to West: West + 135┬░ CCW = South-East.
Ex 8: Walk South, take 3 consecutive Left turns. -> 3 Left = 1 Right. Right of South = West.
Ex 10: A clock reads 4:30. If the minute hand points East, where does the hour hand point? -> At 4:30, minute is at 6 (South normally). If 6 is East (90┬░ CCW shift). Hour hand is at 4-5 (SE normally). Apply shift: SE - 90┬░ = North-East.
Ex 11: Boy rides bicycle North, turns left, then left, then right. -> N -> W -> S -> W. Facing West.
Ex 12: Walk East 5m, turn South 5m, turn West 5m. Where from start? -> You made a square. You are exactly 5m South of the start.
Ex 13: A man performs yoga with his head down and legs up. His face is towards West. In which direction will his left hand be? -> Normal standing facing West: Left is South. Upside down: Left is North.
Ex 14: Electric train travels North, wind blows East. Direction of smoke? -> Electric trains do not produce smoke! No smoke.
Ex 15: Steam train travels North, wind blows East. Direction of smoke? -> Train smoke goes opposite to travel (South). Wind pushes it East. Resultant = South-East.
When a person moves forming a right-angled triangle, the shortest distance from the starting point is the hypotenuse. Calculate it using: тИЪ(Base┬▓ + Perpendicular┬▓).
Ex 1: Walk 3km North, 4km East. Shortest distance? -> тИЪ(3┬▓ + 4┬▓) = тИЪ(9+16) = тИЪ25 = 5km.
Ex 2: Walk 6m South, 8m West. Distance? -> тИЪ(6┬▓ + 8┬▓) = тИЪ(36+64) = тИЪ100 = 10m.
Ex 3: Walk 5km North, 12km East. Distance? -> тИЪ(5┬▓ + 12┬▓) = тИЪ(25+144) = тИЪ169 = 13km.
Ex 4: Walk 8m East, turn left 15m. Distance? -> тИЪ(8┬▓ + 15┬▓) = тИЪ(64+225) = тИЪ289 = 17m.
Ex 5: Walk 9m West, turn right 40m. Distance? -> тИЪ(9┬▓ + 40┬▓) = тИЪ(81+1600) = тИЪ1681 = 41m.
Ex 6: A is 10m East of B. C is 10m North of B. Distance between A and C? -> тИЪ(10┬▓ + 10┬▓) = тИЪ200 = 10тИЪ2 m.
Ex 7: Walk 20m N, turn R 30m, turn R 20m. Distance from start? -> You formed a rectangle. Distance is purely horizontal = 30m East.
Ex 8: Walk 5m E, 5m N, 5m W. Distance from start? -> Purely vertical = 5m North.
Ex 9: Walk 1m N, 2m E, 3m N, 1m E. Total distance vs Shortest? -> Total N = 4. Total E = 3. Shortest = тИЪ(4┬▓ + 3┬▓) = 5m.
Ex 10: Walk 4m W, 6m S, 4m E. Distance? -> You returned to the vertical axis. Distance is 6m South.
Ex 11: Walk 12m N, 5m W, 12m S. Distance? -> 5m West.
Ex 12: Walk 15m S, 8m E. Distance? -> 17m.
Ex 13: A bird flies 3km N, 4km E, then 12km UP into the sky. Total displacement? -> 3D Pythagoras! тИЪ(3┬▓ + 4┬▓ + 12┬▓) = тИЪ(9+16+144) = тИЪ169 = 13km.
Ex 14: Walk 10m N, 10m E, 10m S, 10m W. Distance? -> 0m (At starting point).
Ex 15: P is 6m N of Q. R is 8m W of Q. Distance P to R? -> тИЪ(6┬▓ + 8┬▓) = 10m.

Sun
WEST (Evening)EAST (Morning)
In the Morning (Sunrise), the Sun is in the East. All shadows fall to the West. In the Evening (Sunset), the Sun is in the West. All shadows fall to the East. At 12:00 Noon, there is NO shadow.
Ex 1: Morning. A faces North. Shadow falls? -> Sun is East. Shadow falls West. West is A's Left.
Ex 2: Morning. B faces South. Shadow falls? -> Shadow falls West. West is B's Right.
Ex 3: Morning. C faces East. Shadow falls? -> Shadow falls West. West is C's Back.
Ex 4: Morning. D faces West. Shadow falls? -> Shadow falls West. West is D's Front.
Ex 5: Evening. A faces North. Shadow falls? -> Sun is West. Shadow falls East. East is A's Right.
Ex 6: Evening. B faces South. Shadow falls? -> Shadow falls East. East is B's Left.
Ex 7: Evening. C faces West. Shadow falls? -> Shadow falls East. East is C's Back.
Ex 8: Morning. Ram and Shyam face each other. Ram's shadow is exactly to the right of Shyam. Face of Ram? -> Morning shadow is West. West is Shyam's Right. So Shyam faces South. Ram faces North.
Ex 9: Evening. P and Q face each other. P's shadow falls to the left of Q. Face of P? -> Evening shadow is East. East is Q's Left. Q faces North. P faces South.
Ex 10: Morning. A person is doing Yoga upside down. He faces North. Shadow falls? -> Shadow falls West. Normal standing North = West is Left. Upside down = West is Right.
Ex 11: At 12:30 PM, a man stands in the sun. Direction of shadow? -> Technically, the sun has slightly crossed zenith towards West, shadow slightly East. But usually SSC asks 12 Noon = No Shadow.
Ex 12: One morning after sunrise, Vimal started walking. His shadow fell exactly behind him. He walked? -> Shadow behind means sun is in front. Sun is East. He walked East.
Ex 13: One evening before sunset, Rekha started walking. Shadow fell exactly in front of her. She walked? -> Shadow in front means sun is behind. Sun is West. She walked East.
Ex 14: Morning. Pole's shadow falls to the right of boy. Boy faces? -> Shadow is West. West is boy's Right. Boy faces South.
Ex 15: Evening. House shadow falls to the left of tree. Tree is to the ___ of House? -> Irrelevant! Direction questions ask facing/position. Evening shadow is East.
Master these rules to solve Direction questions in under 15 seconds! Click the listen button to hear your teacher explain each concept.
1. The "NESW" Universal Compass
Draw a plus sign. Top is North, Bottom is South, Right is East, Left is West. The sequence clockwise is always N -> E -> S -> W.
2. Turn Cancellations
If a person turns Left, then Right, the turns cancel out! (1 Left + 1 Right = 0). If they turn Left 3 times, it's the exact same as turning Right 1 time. (3L = 1R). Save time drawing!
3. Angle Arithmetic
Treat Clockwise (CW) turns as Positive, and Anti-Clockwise (CCW) turns as Negative. Add them up. If the total is +45┬░, just turn 45┬░ CW from the starting direction.
4. Pythagorean Triplets Memory
Never calculate squares in the exam! Memorize the holy triplets: (3, 4, 5), (5, 12, 13), (6, 8, 10), (8, 15, 17), (7, 24, 25), (9, 40, 41). If you walk 5m North and 12m East, the distance is instantly 13m.
5. Morning Shadow Anchor
In the morning, the Sun is in the East. EVERY shadow falls in the West. If a shadow is to a person's Left, it means their Left hand points West. Thus, they must be facing North.
6. Evening Shadow Anchor
In the evening, the Sun is in the West. EVERY shadow falls in the East. If a shadow is to a person's Right, their Right hand points East. Thus, they must be facing North.
7. Face-to-Face Shadow Trick
If X and Y are facing each other in the morning, and X's shadow falls to the right of Y. Find Y's face first! West = Y's Right. So Y faces South. X faces opposite = North.
8. The Upside-Down Yoga Shift
If a person stands on their head, their Left and Right sides flip relative to their face. If facing North normally, Left is West. Upside down facing North, Left is East!
9. Shifting Compass Illusion
If a question says "North-East becomes South", calculate the angle shift. NE to S is 135┬░ Clockwise. Apply this exact +135┬░ CW shift to whatever direction the question asks for.
10. Train and Wind Vector
Smoke direction = (Opposite of Train Direction) + (Wind Direction). If Train goes North (smoke goes South), Wind goes East. Result = South + East = South-East.
11. Total vs Shortest Distance
Read carefully! "Total distance covered" means add every single number (3+4 = 7m). "Shortest distance" means apply Pythagoras (тИЪ(3┬▓+4┬▓) = 5m). Don't lose easy marks to misreading.

SSC MTS 2021 Q7. A clock reads 9:00. The hour hand points North. Where does the minute hand point?
(A) East (B) West (C) North (D) South
View Answer & Logic
Answer: (A) East Logic: At 9:00, hour hand is at 9 (normally West), minute hand is at 12 (normally North). If 9 (West) is called North, the whole clock is shifted 90┬░ CW. Apply shift to 12 (North) -> North + 90┬░ CW = East.
