A Message from The Scholars aKademy: Hello Ankush! Statement & Conclusion isn't about guessing the author's intent; it's pure logical boundaries. Stick 100% to the given text, ignore outside facts, and the valid conclusion will reveal itself.

The 4 Core Principles of Deduction

Every Statement & Conclusion question tests your ability to stick to the facts. Follow these 4 absolute rules. Notice how the visual logic perfectly captures valid versus invalid deductions.

Rule 1: Absolute Truth
Assume everything in the statement is 100% true, even if it defies real-world logic (e.g., "All apples are blue").
Rule 2: Zero Outside Knowledge
Never use your general knowledge. If the text doesn't explicitly mention it, you cannot conclude it. The conclusion sits completely outside the fact boundary.
Rule 3: Direct Derivation
A valid conclusion must be a direct result or a mathematical certainty based *only* on the words provided. It must be perfectly inside the boundary.
Rule 4: Do Not Assume Intent
Do not try to guess what the author *implied* or *meant*. This leads to "partial assumptions" where you think it *might* be true, but it's not guaranteed.
Ex 1: "Ram scored 90 marks, which is the highest in the class."
Conclusion: "No one else scored more than 90." (Valid: Mathematical certainty derived directly from "highest").
Ex 2: "The company's profits rose by 20%."
Conclusion: "The company's products are very popular." (Invalid Partial: Rise in profit *could* be due to cost-cutting, so popularity is just a maybe, not a fact).
Ex 3: "Only graduates are eligible for this post."
Conclusion: "A 12th pass student cannot apply." (Valid: Direct derivation of "Only").
Ex 4: "Eating apples keeps the doctor away."
Conclusion: "Oranges are bad for health." (Invalid: The statement says absolutely nothing about oranges).
Ex 5: "No human is immortal."
Conclusion: "Every human will eventually die." (Valid: Direct Restatement/Paraphrase of the statement).
Ex 6: Hidden Subsets
Statement: "All European countries are facing inflation." -> Conclusion: "France is facing inflation." (Valid: Geography fact is required here to identify France as a subset, an exception in SSC).

(Subsets)

The Boundary Rule (No Outside Info)

Imagine the paragraph is a fenced boundary. Any conclusion that requires you to step *outside* that fence to pull in a real-world fact or assumption is immediately FALSE.

Ex 7: Inside the Boundary (Valid)
Statement: "All birds in this sanctuary have red wings." -> Conclusion: "A parrot found in this sanctuary has red wings." (Valid: Parrot safely falls inside the stated boundary of 'all birds in this sanctuary').
Ex 8: Breaking the Boundary (Invalid)
Statement: "Trees provide oxygen." -> Conclusion: "Trees are the *only* source of oxygen on Earth." (Invalid: The word "only" violently breaks the boundary of the given simple fact).
Ex 9: The Common Sense Trap (Invalid)
Statement: "Mr. X is a politician." -> Conclusion: "Mr. X is corrupt." (Invalid: While it might be a common real-world stereotype, the text provided zero evidence for this).
Ex 10: Advice vs. Fact (Invalid)
Statement: "You should drink 8 glasses of water." -> Conclusion: "People who drink less will fall ill." (Invalid: The statement is just a suggestion. The conclusion assumes a strict, unstated consequence).
Ex 11: Unjustified Comparison (Invalid)
Statement: "The metro is a very fast mode of transport." -> Conclusion: "The metro is faster than the bus." (Invalid: The bus was never mentioned, you cannot compare them within this boundary).
Ex 12: Scope Enlargement (Invalid)
Statement: "Many people in City A like tea." -> Conclusion: "All Indians love tea." (Invalid: Expanding the scope from a single city to a whole nation).
Ex 13: Correlation vs Causation (Invalid)
Statement: "Company Z's stock dropped right after the CEO resigned." -> Conclusion: "The CEO's resignation caused the stock drop." (Invalid: It could be a coincidence. Establishing direct causation requires explicit facts).

Keyword Traps: The Modifiers (Modifiers)

Examiners use specific modifier words to turn a perfectly valid deduction into an invalid assumption. Always scan the conclusion for these tricky words.

Trap 1: Extreme Words (Red Flags)
Words like All, None, Always, Never, Only, Must, Exactly, Definitely. If these words appear in the conclusion but NOT in the statement, the conclusion is almost always FALSE because it oversteps the facts.
Trap 2: Soft Words (Green Flags)
Words like Some, Many, Often, Sometimes, Can, May, Likely. These allow for possibilities and subsets, and are much easier to prove true based on a general statement.
Trap 3: Comparative Words (Caution)
Words like Better, Worse, More, Less, Tallest. A conclusion cannot establish a comparison if the statement only discusses one entity independently without a benchmark.
Ex 14: "A diet rich in protein builds muscle."
Conclusion: "Protein is the *only* nutrient needed for muscle." (FALSE. The word "only" makes an extreme leap beyond the text).
Ex 15: "Most students passed the physics exam."
Conclusion: "Some students failed the physics exam." (TRUE. "Most" implies not all, leaving a mathematical subset who didn't pass).
Ex 16: "Water boils at 100°C."
Conclusion: "Water will boil at 100°C tomorrow." (FALSE. While scientifically true, predicting the future from a general present fact is considered a boundary violation in logical reasoning unless specified).
Ex 17: "The metro is a very fast mode of transport."
Conclusion: "The metro is faster than the bus." (FALSE. The bus was never mentioned; no comparative bridge exists).
Ex 18: "Some cats in the shelter are white."
Conclusion: "All cats in the shelter are white." (FALSE. Expanding 'some' to 'all' is an extreme boundary violation).

(Red Flags)
(Green Flags)

⚡ Pro Tips & Speed Tricks (Top 12)

Master these rules to solve Statement & Conclusion questions instantly with zero confusion!

X

1. Reject Past/Future Guesses

If the statement provides current data or present conditions, any conclusion predicting the far future or guessing the historical past is usually an invalid assumption outside the boundary.

!

2. Advice is Not Action

If a statement says "The government should ban plastic," you cannot conclude "Plastic will be banned tomorrow." Advice/suggestion does not equal a guaranteed future certainty.

=

3. Restatements are TRUE

Unlike standard formal Syllogism where exact copies are sometimes considered false, in typical verbal reasoning (Statement & Conclusion), a direct restatement or a perfectly paraphrased sentence is considered an absolutely VALID conclusion.

%

4. Beware of Percentages vs Real Numbers

If a statement says "Company A has 20% growth and Company B has 10% growth," you CANNOT conclude "Company A earned more actual money than B" because their base starting values are completely unknown.

1

5. The Universal-to-Subset Rule

If a statement applies to a general, universal group (e.g., "All Indians love cricket"), you can safely and correctly conclude it applies to a smaller subset ("Some Indians love cricket" or "Ram, an Indian, loves cricket").

6. Emotional Disconnect

Never let your personal feelings or morality dictate the answer. If the statement is "Stealing makes you rich," then in the world of the question, thieves are wealthy. Accept the absurd premise.

&

7. The "And" Separator

If a statement contains "and", treat it as two separate, absolute facts. Example: "Ravi is tall and smart." Conclusion 1: Ravi is tall (Valid). Conclusion 2: Ravi is smart (Valid).

~

8. Cause and Effect Clarification

If A causes B according to the statement, it does not mean B causes A. Example: "Rain causes wet roads" does not mean "Wet roads mean it rained" (someone could have spilled water).

9. The "Some to All" Fallacy

Just because 'some' perform an action, doesn't mean 'all' do. If "Some students failed", concluding "The exam was hard for all students" is an extreme boundary violation.

10. Desirable vs Factual

Don't conclude something just because it sounds like a "good idea." If a conclusion is a desirable outcome but isn't explicitly supported by the text's data, it's invalid.

👽

11. The "Alien Word" Check

If the conclusion introduces a completely new noun or subject that was nowhere in the statement, cross it out immediately. It has breached the fence.

½

12. The "Either/Or" Illusion

Sometimes two conclusions are individually false, but together they cover all possibilities (e.g. I. It will rain. II. It won't rain). Look out for these complementary pairs!

(Restatements)

&

7. "और" (And) विभाजक

½

12. Either/Or का भ्रम

SSC CGL 2023 Q1. Statement: Quality has a price tag. India is allocating a lot of funds to education.
Conclusions: I. Quality of education in India would improve soon. II. Funding alone can enhance quality.
(A) Only I follows   (B) Only II follows   (C) Both I and II follow   (D) Neither follows
View Answer & Logic
Answer: (A) Only I follows
Logical Steps:
Step 1: The statement connects 'funds' (price tag) to 'education' to achieve 'quality'.
Step 2: Conclusion I logically follows because if funds are allocated, quality should improve based on the premise.
Step 3: Conclusion II is invalid because of the extreme modifier word "alone", which pushes it partially outside the boundary.
SSC CGL 2023
(A) केवल I अनुसरण करता है   (B) केवल II अनुसरण करता है   (C) I और II दोनों अनुसरण करते हैं   (D) कोई अनुसरण नहीं करता
SSC CHSL 2023 Q2. Statement: Reading makes a full man, conference a ready man, and writing an exact man.
Conclusions: I. Reading is completely useless. II. Pointed and precise expression comes from writing.
(A) Only I follows   (B) Only II follows   (C) Either I or II follows   (D) Both follow
View Answer & Logic
Answer: (B) Only II follows
Logical Steps:
Step 1: I directly contradicts the statement which highlights reading's positive impact.
Step 2: "Exact" is synonymous with "pointed and precise".
Step 3: Therefore, Conclusion II is a valid subset extraction/paraphrase of "writing makes an exact man".
SSC CHSL 2023
(A) केवल I अनुसरण करता है   (B) केवल II अनुसरण करता है   (C) या तो I या II अनुसरण करता है   (D) दोनों अनुसरण करते हैं
